This bracelet is cast from the quill of a North American Porcupine that hugs the side of the wrist. The quill has enough flexibility to bend to a perfect fit.

NATURAL HISTORY

Erethizon dorsatum

The most common North American porcupine, subspecies E. d. dorsatum, is found across the northern United States and much of Canada. Porcupines are shy and solitary and most active at night. They can live to be 30 years old. Porcupines are excellent climbers and eat a diet of plant matter like leaves, roots, berries, and bark.

Branches stripped of bark and chewed hemlock twigs strewn on snow are signs of a porcupine's presence.

An adult porcupine has about 30,000 quills which are modified hollow hairs that serve as both protection and insulation.

METAPHOR

Protection and self reliance. The quiet of snow on a stand of hemlocks.

Care

Thicket jewelry is meant to be worn and loved but it's always advisable to remove jewelry before exercising, swimming and using harsh chemicals such as cleaning solutions. If you use your hands for work or for other pursuits like gardening or cooking, it's also a good idea to remove rings and bracelets. (And if the piece includes a set diamond you will definitely want to take it off for any activity where it may experience any impacts!)

You can clean your jewelry at home with a soft jewelry cloth or with a gentle soap and a soft toothbrush. If your piece includes oxidized sterling silver avoid vigorous polishing to preserve the darkened finish.

If your piece is set with a diamond it is important to regularly inspect it to be sure the diamond is secure and that there is no movement of the stone in the setting.

Porcupine quill bracelet

Lovely, delicate and strong. Just like a porcupine quill. I just moved to NH and saw my very first porcupine in the wild! The bracelet could not be a more artful reminder of the awe that nature inspires.
